June 2008 Summer 2008 newsletter [pdf copy] - the latest issue of our newsletter has a complete listing of Older citizens' week events being held from Monday 23 June to Friday 27 June.
  Job vacancies - we have three job vacancies currently. The vacancies are for an Administrative Assistant, a Health Ageing Leader's Assistant and a Case Finding Assessor. All the jobs are part-time.
May 2008 Arts and cultural acivities provision - we are carrying out a survey to find out what arts and culture activities are provided in Waltham Forest for older adults (aged 50 and over) in order to find out what is available for this age group and what might be developed in the future. If you run arts or cultural activites, we would be very grateful if you would download and complete our survey. The survey can be downloaded as a Word document or a PDF file.
  Cyclone Nargis appeal - Help the Aged has been a long term member of The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). DEC has launched a national appeal for the victims of the Myanmar (Burma) cyclone and, as a member agency, Help the Aged will be supporting the appeal and working with partners in the country to bring relief to affected older people and their families. Help the Aged's international partner, HelpAge International, is coordinating an emergency response team to assess the situation of the estimated 170,000 older people in Myanmar affected by Cyclone Nargis. Older people are often overlooked in emergencies and the work of HelpAge International and Help the Aged is vitally important in ensuring that older people's basic needs are met in the relief efforts.   Waltham Forest Libraries Literature Festival - as part of Waltham Forest Council's celebration of the National Year of Reading, the council's Library Service is holding a literature festival from 16 - 25 May. A copy of the festival's programme is available on the council's website.
April 2008 Quality care: The Big Q - we know the current care system is not working, so The Big Question is:
Are you concerned about the quality of care - have you or someone you know had a bad experience of care?

If the answer is yes, we want to hear your thoughts and views on the system. There are a number of ways you can get involved and you can find out more about these and the campaign on Age Concern's website by following the link above.

  Commision for Social Care Inspection survey - the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) is carrying out a major review of the eligibility criteria that councils use to decide whether or not a person receives help from the council with social care services. More information about the review and an online survey form are available on the CSCI website. The closing date for written submission and completing the survey form is 9 May 2008.

  Arts and culture questionnaire - Age Concern Waltham Forest is carrying out a survey to find out what arts and culture activities older adults take part in or would like to take part in to ensure Waltham Forest Council's strategy takes their views into account. A copy of the survey questionnaire can be downloaded from this site.
  Silver sounds - Age Concern Waltham Forest is offering older adults a chance to take course on making radio programmes. More details are available on the Silver sounds poster.
  Age is just a number - Waltham Forest Council, in partnership with Age Concern Waltham Forest, is planning a week full of taster sessions, activities and events for older adults starting 23 June. More details will be availablenearer the time in the Waltham Forest Magazine and on our website.
March 2008 Radio skills taster session - would you like to find out about how a radio station works? Would you like to try out interviewing techniques? Would you like to see how a radio programme is put together? Do you have an interest in music or drama? Would you like to find out about a training course in radio broadcasting?

If you've answered yes to any of these questions, why not come along to a free taster session to discover how you might become involved in broadcasting - or just to get answers to your questions?

February 2008 Sheltered accomodation to let - there are two one-person flats to let in a sheltered housing unit in the Blackhorse Lane/Billet Road area. The flats are suitable for independent over-55s.
  Silver surfers partnership - a new Silver surfers partnership between Age Concern Waltham Forest and Waltham Forest Council's Library Service is set to begin in April. Free beginners computer courses for older people will be available in Hale End, Walthamstow Central and Harrow Green libraries.   Winter warmth event- information and advice will be available at our Winter warmth event on Thursday 21 February. The event is being held at The Jubilee Centre, Cathall Street, Leytonstone between 10.00am and 3.00pm. More details are available on the event flyer [pdf copy].
  Hospital discharge services - information about our Hospital discharge services has been updated and new information about the criteria for using our Welcome home service added to our site.
  Rags to riches - On 11 February, Age Concern Waltham Forest will launch a door-to-door collection scheme to help fund services which will improve the quality of life of older people in Waltham Forest. We urgently need clean clothing, household textiles, curtains and linens. All you will need to do is fill a collection bag and leave it outside, visible from the road, on the day printed on the bag. Our collectors - who will be wearing badges showing they work for Age Concern - will collect all bags, both empty and full, from 8.00am.   Developing a positive approach to falls prevention in older people - this conference is being held in London on 12 March and provides an important update on raising awareness of falls and helping older people to lead active healthy lifestyle. The conference includes a workshop run by Chris Bateson, leader of our Case finding programme, and Jean Williams, leader of our Healthy ageing programme. January 2008 Expert patients programme - a new Expert patients programme is starting at the end of January. More information and an application form are available on our website or in the flyer for this course [pdf copy].
  Free computers for the over-50s - we have closed the registration list for free computers for the over-50s in Waltham Forest as our allocation of computers has now been assigned. People who have registered for a free computer will be sent details of when this can be collected.
  Immersion heater safety - information about the safety risks of some older immersion heaters is available, including details of how to see if your heating system may be at risk.
  Safer neighbourhoods online survey - every neighbourhood in London has a dedicated Safer Neighbourhoods team who deal with local concerns that affect peoples quality of life. Local communities can now use an online survey to let their local Safer Neighbourhoods team know of any concersn they may have. December 2007 Outcomes training - free training course for voluntary and community organisations on how to use an outcomes focus to improve accountability and effectivess.
  Health and social care grants - funding is available from this scheme for members of the Waltham Forest Older peoples' voluntary sector partnership.

  Safer homes week, 22 - 26 October. If you would like to find out more about how to make your home safer and more secure, please come along to one of the three events we will be holding in the borough.
  Volunteering strategy - the council have published their draft volunteering strategy and would like comments on this and its associated Action plan by 31 October.
  Club Wellness games, 19 October. GLL, in partnership with the London Borough of Waltham Forest, is calling on anyone aged over 55 years old and living in Waltham Forest to take part in London's very own 'Olympics' for older people - the Club Wellness Games - at Newham Leisure Centre. The Games will take place on 19 October 2007 and will celebrate the Day of Older Persons which was held on the 1 October.
  NHS continuing healthcare - retrospective claims. The Department of Health has announced that any remaining retrospective review cases, which are currently considered under a process active ever since an Ombudsman Report was published in 2003, should be raised with the relevant NHS body on or by 30th November 2007.

  NTA Community Projects are running open days on 12 and 13 September from 11.00am to 3.30pm at 214 Langthorne Road, Leyton. NTA Community Projects aim is to enhance the well-being of elderly and disabled people within Waltham Forest by helping to build confidence and improve their quality of life and the open days are a good opportunity to catch up on their work. August 2007 Help the Aged is seeking the views of older people on driving as later this year the government will be considering changes to the licencing regime for older drivers. If you would like to take part in Help the Aged's survey, please download the survey form [pdf copy], and return it to Help the Aged by 7 September.
  Win a car! Enter Age Concern's free prize draw - and win a car or £6000. Just download an entry form [pdf copy], fill it in and return it to Age Concern. It's as easy as that!
July 2007 a selection of the little hats knitted last yearGet knitting for Age Concern! - to raise awareness of our 'Keep warm in winter' campaign, we are asking residents of Waltham Forest to knit 1000 little hats. Innocent - famous for their smoothies - will pay Age Concern 50p for every hat.
  Capital Age Festival - London's largest and liveliest arts festival organised by, for and with older people - is taking place on Sunday 19 August. The festival celebrates the contribution of older Londoners and is a visible demonstration of the importance of active participation by older people, as performers, audience members and volunteers.   Expert patient programme - a new course will be starting in September. More information about the expert patient programme and an application form are available.

  Our shop in Leytonstone High Road closed on 4 June 2007. We would like to thank everyone who has supported the shop in the last nine years - the profits from the shop made a tremendous difference to owur work with the borough's older people. We are looking at the possiblities of opening a new shop in Waltham Forest, perhaps in collaboration with with Age Concern England.
  Mental Capacity Act - a briefing on the Mental Capacity Act 2005 which became law in April this year is now available.
May 2007 10 May 2007 - as part of Deaf Awareness Week, a drop-in session has been organised at the Disability Resource Centre, Walthamstow for hard of hearing, deaf or deafened people, professionals, family and carers. More information is available from 020 8520 8347 or the event flyer
